Cremated ashes mainly contain minerals such as calcium, potassium, and phosphorus, but they may also contain harmful substances including heavy metals and high concentrations of salt. An important issue is that the pH value of ashes is usually extremely high (strongly alkaline), ranging from 10 to 12. In addition, ashes contain higher concentrations of sodium and potassium salts.
These chemical components significantly impact the soil: high alkalinity changes the soil’s pH, destroys its structure, reduces the activity of soil microorganisms, and affects the supply and absorption of nutrients. Sodium and potassium salts can cause salinisation, drying out the soil and making it difficult to retain moisture, which can easily burn and dehydrate the delicate roots of plants, especially seedlings, causing growth stagnation or even death.
